Portuguese Wines (Port Wine)

Port wine, a fortified wine from Portugal’s Douro Valley, is celebrated for its rich flavours and historical roots. This exceptional wine, named after the city of Porto, embodies Portuguese winemaking at its finest.

Types of Port Wine:

Ruby Port:

With its deep red colour and fruity, youthful character, Ruby Port is aged briefly in large vats to retain its vibrant flavours.

Tawny Port:

Aged in wooden barrels, Tawny Port acquires a golden-brown hue and complex notes of dried fruits, nuts, and caramel. Available in various age statements, it offers a refined tasting experience.

Explore our selection of Port wines and indulge in the unique, timeless flavours that only the finest Portuguese wines can offer. Perfect for both connoisseurs and new enthusiasts, Port wine is a delightful addition to any collection.

Port wine’s storied history dates back to the 17th century in the Douro Valley of northern Portugal. English merchants, seeking to secure a steady wine supply during conflicts with France, discovered the region’s robust, full-bodied wines. To ensure stability during long sea voyages, winemakers fortified the wine by adding grape spirit (aguardente), creating the distinct, sweet Port wine we know today.

The Methuen Treaty of 1703 further cemented Port wine’s popularity in England by reducing tariffs, fostering a thriving trade. The Douro Valley became the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756, ensuring quality and authenticity.

Port wine has since become synonymous with tradition and excellence, with its rich flavours and diverse styles cherished globally. This fortified wine remains a testament to Portugal’s enduring winemaking heritage, captivating enthusiasts with its deep historical roots and exceptional taste.

Port wine is best enjoyed in a small, tulip-shaped glass to concentrate its rich aromas. Serve it slightly chilled, around 12-16°C (54-61°F) for optimal flavour. Sip it neat to appreciate its complexity, pairing well with desserts like chocolate, cheese, or nuts. Ruby Port complements berry desserts, while Tawny Port pairs excellently with caramel or nutty treats. Vintage Port, decanted to remove sediment, is perfect for special occasions. Whether after a meal as a digestif or alongside a cheese platter, Port wine offers a delightful, versatile drinking experience.
