Tasting note
No.52-22 from Grosperrin is a Fins Bois cognac from a small family farm in the commune of Brousse, near Matha. It is the marriage of two lots, 1952 and 1922, assembled by the grower himself on the advice of a major cognac house. Born in 1952, he still holds cognacs distilled by his father and his grandfather.
Like most Charente estates, the farm once distilled its wine in a small 500 or 600 litre boiler. Only in 1950 did it install a traditional 16 hectolitre Maresté still, fired with wood by day for the first distillation and with charcoal by night for the second.
Nose. Clean and direct, with the character of old Fins Bois and a delicate rancio. What stands out is the intensity of red fruit: blackcurrant bud, redcurrant and cherry, with remarkable complexity.
Palate. The entry is straightforward, almost easy, bringing the sandalwood, cedar and pepper you would expect at this age. Then blackcurrant bursts through with sharply defined, captivating aromas that take the cognac somewhere new. The finish is long and complex.
