Tasting note

A half bottle of Chateau Saint-Georges, the Desbois family estate in Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion, one of the satellite appellations that ring the town of Saint-Emilion on Bordeaux's Right Bank. The vineyard is a single south-facing slope, and the family has run it since 1891, when Petrus Desbois replanted the vines on grafted rootstock after phylloxera. The wine is built on Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in support, matured in French oak and bottled at the chateau. Reviewing the 2020 in this format, Jeff Leve found it medium-bodied, fresh and silky, with a floral note, sweet red cherries and touches of cocoa, liquorice and espresso. The 375ml size suits a dinner for two, a weeknight bottle or a picnic, and it is a practical way to try a proper Right Bank Bordeaux.
