Tasting note

Twenty five years in oak is long enough for rancio to arrive, and rancio is the reason to open this one. It is the nutty, faintly savoury note that old brandy develops in cask, closer to walnut skin and dried fruit than to anything sweet, and it is what separates a properly aged brandy from a young one.

The colour is deep amber with olive green edges. Soft spice comes first, pepper and cinnamon and clove, then vanilla and gingerbread, and the walnut rancio sits under all of it. The palate is rounded rather than sharp, with tannin that has softened and a cocoa note through the middle.

Serve it neat at room temperature in a tulip glass, no ice, and give it five minutes in the glass before the first sip. It also holds up against dark chocolate at seventy per cent or higher. At 40 per cent from Lannepax, this is a bottle for the birthday and anniversary end of the shelf, so it is worth checking our born in year collections if you are buying for a particular year.

Delivery information

Most orders to New Zealand leave within 2 to 7 business days depending on the item. If anything is delayed we will tell you.

New Zealand orders travel by tracked international post. The cost is calculated at checkout. The free delivery threshold offered in Australia does not apply to New Zealand orders.

Prices are shown in New Zealand dollars. Orders may attract New Zealand customs duty, GST and clearance fees on arrival. Those costs are set by New Zealand Customs, are payable by the recipient, and are not collected by Liquor Wine Cave.

Once your order is confirmed you will receive a shipping notification with a tracking reference. Larger or mixed orders sometimes travel as more than one parcel, and you will get tracking for each.

Alcohol can only be delivered to a person aged 18 or over. The courier may ask for photo ID and will not leave your order unattended. We do not offer authority to leave on alcohol orders.

We do not deliver to PO boxes or parcel lockers.

Case minimums

Some products are sold only in cases of three, six or twelve. Where that applies it is stated above the add to cart button, not discovered at checkout.

Cases ship as a single carton. The per-case price shown includes every bottle in the case.

Delord Vineyard

Our vineyard spans 45 hectares, divided into 11 parcels, and is located in the village of Lannepax. It consists of the four traditional Armagnac grape varieties: Ugni Blanc (58%), Colombard (16%), Folle-Blanche (14%), and Baco (12%). Rinaldo, our vineyard manager, meticulously tends to the vines throughout the year.

Delord Distillery

The distillery is located in Lannepax, the family’s native village. Distillation, a crucial and fascinating step in the creation of Armagnac, occurs in the heart of winter. We are one of the few Armagnac houses using both distillation methods: the continuous distillation typical for Armagnac and double distillation. Our two Armagnac stills, one of which is a "Sier" dating from 1900, are column stills equipped with special "spider plates" ideal for producing aged Armagnacs. The two "double distillation" stills produce fruity eaux-de-vie intended for young Armagnacs.

Winemaking Cellar

The four grape varieties are harvested, pressed, and vinified separately in a winemaking cellar located a few metres from the distillery. Sylvain Delord expertly manages temperature control, must settling, and racking techniques. He aims to produce an aromatic wine that is slightly acidic and low in alcohol, which is ideal for distillation.

Armagnac Ageing

Delord Cellars house over 1,000 barrels and a dozen oak tanks, age and protect the Armagnac eaux-de-vie from the 20th century to the present day. The oldest vintages are stored in Bonbonnes (glass jars) away from light, in a room called Paradise.
