Tasting note
Gilles Dumangin runs Champagne Dumangin J. Fils at Chigny-les-Roses and, alongside his champagnes, selects whiskies from distilleries around the world and finishes them in the barrels that held his estate's Ratafia Champenois. He calls the result the Dumangin Champagne twist.
Batch 026 is a 100% rye whisky, with no malt or corn, from the Zuidam distillery in the Netherlands, maker of Millstone. Gilles came across it on a visit to Zuidam after the ProWein fair in Germany, while searching for a pure rye. It was distilled in December 2016, aged 4 years in a bourbon barrel, then given a 21 month finish in the estate's Ratafia Champenois cask T-019 before bottling at the Dumangin estate in August 2023. Dumangin gives the age as 6 years, the strength as 47.4% and notes no chill filtration, and the run is 334 numbered bottles, each in its own case.
Gilles picked it because the wood speaks clearly in the spirit. When he bought it, the whisky was still almost white after years in cask; the ratafia gave it a warm golden colour and a remarkable roundness.
