Tasting note

Clos Faubard is a Santenay premier cru just north of the village, above Les Gravieres, where the slope climbs towards scrubland. Its red, stony soil lies over hard rock, the same Bajocian marl limestone found in the Cote de Nuits, which gives the wine a spicy, mineral edge. The Muzard family is one of only three owners here, working 1.47 hectares of vines that are mostly 60 to 70 years old. Brothers Claude and Herve Muzard, whose family roots in Santenay go back to 1645, ferment the Pinot Noir with about 40 per cent whole bunches and indigenous yeasts, then give it 12 months in barriques, 30 per cent of them new. The reds are bottled unfined with minimal filtration. Expect vibrant red fruit and a dense, mineral palate with purity and length. It has the structure to cellar for several years; serve with game birds or roast pork.
