Tasting note
Maidenii is an Australian vermouth made by winemaker Gilles Lapalus and bartender Shaun Byrne, named after Joseph Maiden, a champion of the eucalypt and the acacia. Their Sweet Vermouth starts with a Cabernet Sauvignon base wine and is bottled at 16%. This is the 375ml half bottle.
Botanicals. Four Australian-grown botanicals lead: strawberry gum, wattle seed, river mint and sea parsley, joined by grapefruit zest, mace and angelica root.
The Negroni it was built for. Maidenii designed this vermouth with the Negroni in mind. Their method: build equal measures of the vermouth, Campari and a gin you like over ice in a rocks glass, then finish with a twist of orange. It is equally happy on its own, straight from the fridge.
