Tasting note

The Saurel family have farmed vines around Gigondas since 1821, and Domaine Saint Damien in its current form dates from 1979. Joel and Amie Saurel now run it with their son Romain, who makes the wines, and the vineyards have been certified organic since 2012. La Louisiane comes from old vines on the lower terraces opposite the winery, on poor red soils. The 2023 is roughly 80% Grenache planted in 1942, with Mourvedre from 1977 plus a little Cinsault and Syrah. The grapes ferment on their skins for around six weeks in large concrete vats, then the wine spends 12 months in big old foudres and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Critics note dark blackberry and kirsch with ground pepper, garrigue and meaty spice, carried by fine tannins. A deep, serious Gigondas with the structure to cellar.
