Tasting note

Domaine Saint Damien is run by the Saurel family, who have farmed around Gigondas since 1821 and established the domaine in its current form in 1979. Romain Saurel now makes the wines alongside his parents Joel and Amie, and the vineyards have been certified organic since 2012. Les Souteyrades is one of the domaine's old-vine Gigondas cuvees, from lower terraces near the Ouveze river. It is built on Grenache planted in 1948 with around 20% Mourvedre planted in 1977. The grapes ferment on their skins for around seven weeks in large concrete vats, and the wine is then aged for 12 months in large old foudres before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Critics have noted kirsch, blackberries, flowers and garrigue in recent vintages, with a generous, savoury palate and fine tannins.
