Tasting note

Doyen d'Âge is a blend from Roger Groult, the family calvados house at the Clos de la Hurvanière in the Pays d'Auge. About 30 hectares of tall orchards, some 6,000 trees of around thirty apple varieties, are farmed organically, with cattle grazing under the trees. The cider ferments slowly and naturally on fine lees before it is double distilled in wood fired stills, as the Pays d'Auge appellation requires.

Groult blends by a perpetual method close to a solera: casks are never fully emptied, so a thread of very old calvados runs through every cuvée. The house gives Doyen d'Âge as a blend of at least 30 years, the age on the label being that of the youngest spirit, and bottles it at 41% on the estate without chill filtration.

Tasting. Concentrated, rich and velvety, with baked apple, smoke, orange blossom, tobacco and vanilla. Groult sums it up as the very essence of caramelised cooked apple, with superb notes of tarte tatin.

Groult presents it as an exceptional after dinner calvados. More in our calvados collection.

Normandy is too far north for wine grapes, so it distils apples instead.

Delivery information

Most orders to New Zealand leave within 2 to 7 business days depending on the item. If anything is delayed we will tell you.

New Zealand orders travel by tracked international post. The cost is calculated at checkout. The free delivery threshold offered in Australia does not apply to New Zealand orders.
